Monsters

Encounters revolve around evasion, light and eye-focus abilities rather than combat builds. This is a guide to documented creatures, not an official numbered bestiary or a claim to name every background model. Route spoilers follow.

Source-based research, not a hands-on scare report. The cited guides distinguish ordinary hiding encounters from scripted eye-focus scenes; no personal deaths, testing or jumpscare count is claimed.

The named creatures

Encounter names used by published walkthroughs. Counters depend on the room, not merely the creature's appearance.
CreatureWhereWhat works
CrawlerEarly road encounters and later pressure-pad roomsUse wardrobe cover and candle distractions; later orange-eye prompts can hold a lured creature on a pad.
GrinnerThe Craftsman's Heart and Moon MountainUse cover; a Matchlock shot to the exposed face stuns. The final cave instead needs closed-eye focus on a blue eye.
MolgrimChapter 2Stealth. It steals Potboy. You do not kill it.
Red-eye / Nameless creaturesCoalhaven's coffin and Key Critter routesClose your eyes and focus the hostile red eye to clear the encounter.
The Dark ItselfStory threat and final sequenceProgress with light and the chapter objectives; the finale is Burn or Stop, not a damage phase.

The Moonbird and Housy belong in the character guide, not an enemy kill list. Coalhaven's story ghost also has a quest resolution: return the bones, complete the furnace sequence and light her match. Do not confuse that with removing a hostile red eye. No verified numerical jumpscare tally or universal enemy-damage table is available here.

Questions

How many monsters are there?

This page covers the named threats supported by its sources, not an official total. Moonbird and Housy are not counted as enemies simply because they look unusual.

Can I fight them?

There is no conventional combat-build progression. You can stun a Grinner with the Matchlock, but most encounters ask for hiding, distraction or a specific eye-focus action.

What is the scariest one?

That is taste. The documented chase is the Crawler. The Grinner is the one that sprints.
